Economic & Livelihood Conditions of Rag Pickers in Puducherry

Abstract

The rapid growth of population will enhance the higher solid waste generation. Nowadays, new technological improvements help to produce easy and attractive products that may attract the consumer. However, changing the lifestyle pattern of people has to increase and change in the consumer behaviour as well as solid waste will lead to affect the surrounding environment and people health. The rag pickers are the people who actually go through the dustbins and take scraps, sell into scrap dealers for their earnings, and sustain their daily needs. The rag pickers are comes under the informal sector. The rag pickers come out of the family and doing this rag-picking job but their livelihood condition are not satisfactory in this society. In this research study was carried out from Puducherry and in this paper seek to address the economic and livelihood conditions of rag pickers.
